Drummer’s Review
Sixty years ago it began with a simple set of bongos! Martin Cohen, founder of Latin Percussion (LP), fell in love with the infectious nature of Latin-Jazz and when he could not find any bongos, he decided to make some – the traditional way, and LP was born. Building on the company’s legacy of authenticity, innovation, and quality, LP are delighted to launch the 60th Anniversary Congas, Bongos, Timbales and Cajon.
The limited-edition set of 60th Anniversary Congas are constructed of fiberglass to pay tribute to LP’s original drums and Top-Tuning Comfort Curve II rims representing the company’s latest evolution in conga technology. The set consists of an 11” Quinto, 11 ¾” Conga and a 12 ½” Tumba. Each drum shell is hand-painted with Roasted Hazel finish ensuring each drum is unique. They are emblazoned with a commemorative LP60 badge and complemented by select black, rawhide heads, and Rustic Bronze-plated hardware. When played they produce a deep resonant bass with cutting highs.
Made to match the 60th Anniversary Congas, the limited-edition 60th Anniversary Bongos (LP200XF-60) are built using Kevlar reinforced fibreglass, feature Comfort Curve II rims, and 5/16” tension rods, have a hand-painted, Roasted Hazel finish with black, rawhide heads, and Rustic Bronze-plated hardware. The pair of 7-¼” and 8-5/8” drums offer a crisp and resonant tone.
The 60th Anniversary Groove Cajon (LP1427-60) is also made to coordinate with the 60th Anniversary Congas with its hand-painted Roasted Hazel finish and Rustic Bronze soundboard finish. Measuring 18-½” by 11” by 10-¼” it is crafted from hand-selected Baltic Birch and features rounded corners for comfortable play. Its distinctive bright, punchy sound has a strong attack and fast decay.
Also produced for this diamond celebration are the matching 60th Anniversary Timbales (LP1415-60). The 14” and 15” steel shell drums feature rolled out bottoms, a tribute to LP’s original drums, and the latest Top-Tuning Comfort Curve II rims The shells are finished in Antique Bronze with Rustic Bronze hardware giving the timbales a retro feel with a modern twist.
